Emily’s Smiles through Difficult Trials

Updates about the Emily Hollis Medulloblastoma Cancer Journey

In the step down unit – 5300 wing

We arrived in 5300 step down area,  Emily is trying to rest.  She has been vomiting alot,  and her head is hurting.  They have her on morphine every 2 hours and we are trying to keep tylenol down, but not working yet.  She has a fever, and they are deciding what she needs most to run through her lines because she is behind on meds that  we usually do at night and in the afternoon.   We know the staff infection was the worst of the two types , which I didn’t know there were different types.  That was told to us prior to surgery by a  fellow  Dr. on 5100.   After surgery we talked with  the surgeron,  he said the staff infection was in the shunt and surrounding  tissues.  He removed the VP shunt and tissue areas around shunt on both sides that had been infected.   Part of the shunt  tubing was actually  exposed all along,  I thought It was part of the scab, that was healing, because it was not a dark scab that it once was .  It was an area light in color  like  you see when healing takes place longterm.  I told him it has been like that for a long time.  I was surprised no one has detected this, and the surgeon was too.  I know they have put high dose antibiotics in the local area  where the VP shunt was removed as well as antibiotics through her lines.  The temporary tubing had to be placed in a different location toward the front of the brain,   because they could not use the same site as before to run the tubing  because of  infection in local site and surrounding tissue areas.   If they put another perm shunt in it will have to be placed on the top/front part of the brain.   Thank you to everyone for keeping us in your prayers.
Love,  Emily, Dawn and Eddie

Shunt Surgery over

Filed under: — sho at 5:58 pm on Tuesday, January 23, 2007

I don’t have all the details from Dawn yet, but Emily’s surgery is over & she is back in PICU on the 5th floor at Duke as of about 4:30 this afternoon.  She does have a staff infection which they will be treating aggressively.  There is a new temporary drain to remove fluid and it will be determined later about another shunt.  Still no word on the line infection in her chest, they think it is a different type infection.  She is resting comfortably in ICU and Dawn & Eddie are with her.  They can stay with her round the clock; however, they are not allowed to sleep in this room.  Please pray for a restful night for Emily and for strength for Eddie & Dawn as they watch over her.  I’ll report more when I know it.  Thanks to all for your many prayers today for Emily, the family and for the surgeon’s hands.           Stephanie
