Updates about the Emily Hollis Medulloblastoma Cancer Journey

NY info / Help!

Eddie & Dawn got word this afternoon that they must be in NY Sloan-Kettering Hospital this Monday for a 12:00 consultation and treatment scheduled for Wednesday. This has come about suddenly and we are scrambling to get a flight. At this late date there is not an Angel Flight available so we must purchase airline tickets for the 3 of them and arrange ground transportation into Manhatten to the hospital. We were hoping to fly them out of Wilmington; however, the rate is unaffordable and creates a couple of layovers. Flights out of RDU are reasonable but of course means they have to be there by 5 a.m. to catch 6 a.m. flight to get them there on time. They have to fly into LaGuardia airport and from there it is about an hours drive to the hospital. Transportation fare to the hospital could be pricey. :???:

With that said, if there is :!: anyone out there than can help us with the arrangements, PLEASE CALL ME – 910-470-3603 (anytime). :!: We need to get everything settled by tomorrow (Saturday) evening so they can make appropriate plans. We had hoped for a little more notice than this so we are a little nervous at the moment! This will be a one-way trip due to their uncertainty of their return date. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Many of you have been calling and emailing with a desire to contribute to the NY expenses. Financial Contributions should be made payable to EMILY’S ENCOURAGERS and mailed c/o Stephanie Ottaway 108 S. Belvedere Dr. Hampstead, NC 28443. All funds can be accessed by them for Emily’s care. Should you have any questions feel free to call me at the above # or email: shotopsail@aol.com

Eddie & Dawn are nervous about flying into such a busy airport and large city. Please pray for their peace of mind and calm assurance that they have many concerned supporters behind them, but most of all that God will lead their way. I believe Emily is a little excited to get to fly! Yesterday she was busy packing her jewelry just for an overnight trip to Duke. I bet she’ll pack the whole jewelry box for NY! She is ready to conquer this new treatment with the same bravery and strength that has brought her this far. Continue to pray for her comfort and strength to see this through.

Love,
Stephanie

School / Labs & MRI / New York

Filed under: — sho at 10:48 pm on Tuesday, September 11, 2007

I know everyone wants to hear about Emily’s “homie home” days. Updates are spread out these days as I try to let Emily and family lead a normal life with school, football, work and a regular home life. As always, No News is Good News!

Emily has been able to attend school  for a couple of hours on several days in the last couple of weeks. She tires easily, still has an appetite, but loves her school work and being in a classroom full of kids her age. In between she has been visiting, playing with friends and going to watch Trey practice football and sometimes taking in a football game on Saturday! In other words, doing everything normal and natural for a little girl her age.

Last week she did go to Duke for the day and had her labs done. The Reservoir Flow Study previously done came back with good results and showed that any treatment injected through it flows properly throughout her body. This also means that they are for sure headed to NY!!! Eddie, Dawn & Emily will head back to Duke Thursday evening and on Friday morning Emily is scheduled for another 2 hour MRI and various other testing in preparation for NY Sloan-Kettering Hospital. They will also find out all details of this trip. We know that they will fly out of RDU on an “Angel Flight” to the big city. Her treatment is tentatively scheduled for 9/24. Now that the recent radioactive material is out of system they hope to proceed quickly with this new treatment. Emily is doing well but is now experiencing pain along the neck area and into the left arm. She is on some extra medication for this pain and also something for the thyroid, again, all in preparation for treatment in NY.

NY is going to be a whole new world for Emily, Dawn & Eddie. A strange city with many new faces and paths to learn, no family, friends, or familiar faces to turn to for help. They are uncertain of the length of time they will be there, maybe just a week, maybe more, they just don’t know right now. Ground transportation (expensive) will be needed from the airport to the hospital, lodging will possibly be at the Ronald McDonald House (appx. $40/night), meals will be purchased, and possibly many other expenses. It is also possible that another emergence will come up preventing them from flying on the Angel Flight. Should this occur they will have to scramble, at the airport, to obtain airline tickets on there own in a speedy manner, to get to NY in time. There are quite a few hurdles and “what ifs” they will have to be prepared to face. If you would like to contribute in some way to these additional expenses, please feel free to contact me at: shotopsail@aol.com or 910-470-3603.

So, that’s a quick rundown of the last couple of weeks. Hopefully by the weekend we’ll have definite answers and protocol information for Emily and NY. Keep the prayers & family uplifted for the traveling days and new treatment ahead of Emily!

Love,
Stephanie

“Homie Home”

Filed under: — sho at 11:12 pm on Sunday, September 2, 2007

Emily certainly had a busy time this past week at Duke. She finished her last radiation treatment on Thursday. That was followed by labs most of the afternoon. Friday she had another Reservoir Flow Study and scan. Saturday morning she had another scan and then hit the road headed home! Emily & Dawn made it home in time to stop by the park and watch Trey and his football team play football. YEAH Trey!

For now it looks like Emily is home for a couple of weeks while they wait to hear about her scan results and the possibility of heading to NY. It takes about two weeks for the radioactive material to get out of her system and this must happen before she could receive additional treatment in NY. Until such time, Emily plans to be at home where she can play, visit school, go to Trey’s football games and do all the natural things little girls do! Eddie, Dawn, Trey & Emily are thrilled to all be home together and under one roof with normal day to day activities! There’s no place like home!!!

I’ll keep you updated!

Love,
Stephanie
